Introduction
Please be aware
that these notes are extremely brief and offer only the smallest
of introductions. They are meant as a very basic overview. Circumstances
differ between chemical, its use, production methods, the environment
and the employees themselves; hence it is not practical to go
into specifics here.
Environmental monitoring is
an additional strategy that can be used to assess the levels of
risk posed by physical agents within the environment - for example:
- noise levels
- radiation levels
- lighting levels
- nuisance dust levels
within air
- specific chemical or
other hazardous material levels within air e.g. lead, asbestos
- air quality or climate
parameters
- bacteria levels
The environmental monitoring
results gained are an important indicator or individual or group
exposures and therefore risk levels. The results will also indicate
whether existing control measures are working effectively, as
well as highlighting areas in need of further attention.
There are also specific and
implied legal requirements for environmental monitoring, contained
within the following legislation and guidance documents:
- Health &
Safety at Work etc Act 1974
- Management
of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
- Control of
Noise at Work Regulations 2005
- Control of
Vibration at Work Regulations 2005
- Control of
Asbestos Regulations 2006
- Control of
Lead at Work Regulations 2002
- Legionnairesdisease:
